Where Clarus Caelum began
At 26, I was entrusted with leading the Integrated Operations Management and Control System (IOMCS) programme for WestConnex. I was working for a major Spanish systems integrator with a leading Australian motorway-control and intelligent transport systems (ITS) business.
The programme connected control-system work for the M4/M8 Link and Rozelle Interchange, modifications to and integration of M4 East and New M8, and preparation for the future integration of M6 Stage 1. It brought new and existing motorway systems into a shared operating environment while preparing for further expansion.
I led multidisciplinary work involving teams in Australia and overseas, connecting technical designs, interfaces, suppliers, testing and readiness for operation. The role required technical judgement, programme control and executive decision-making, with responsibility for how the separate parts came together.
Bringing the IOMCS into operation ahead of schedule was an important achievement. Looking back, the strongest lesson was how much depended on the connections between disciplines, organisations and decisions, and on leadership that carried those connections through to delivery.
Connecting project delivery with the business
Delivering the programme also required transformation of the local Australian business. My role combined leadership of the technical programme with the organisational changes needed to support it. Delivery depended on the business's capability, responsibilities and decisions being aligned with its commitments.
That combination of technical, project, transformation and executive leadership led me to establish Clarus Caelum. I wanted to build a business that connects a client's engineering and delivery decisions with its commercial priorities, organisational capability and executive objectives.
